I built these industrial shelves to replace the buffet that I moved into my livingroom/office
Here is my Great Grandmother's buffet from my dining room/great room.
This is it's new resting spot.
I blogged about it here.
I needed a new piece of furniture to go in my dining room/great room. I searched Craig's List for old china cabinets that I wanted to paint. I physically went to look at two different ones. They just weren't quite right and I followed my gut by not buying them even though they both were pretty and a great price.
Originally I was searching for a piece that I could transform into something like this stunning piece from The Shabbiest Chick.

I decided the problem was I wanted a piece with open shelving. I've had this idea in my head that just wouldn't go away. I drew a sketch of what I wanted and priced out the materials. This isn't one of my cheaper projects, but I'm really happy with the way it turned out and it's still way more cost effective by building it myself. It would have cost me 3 to 4 times more to buy this already made in a retail store. I searched the Internet and Pinterest to see if there was anyone else on the same wave length and here are some great pics. I found that contributed to my inspiration.
I searched for reclaimed wood and struck out.
I ended up distressing new wood using white vinegar and steel wool.
The Sweet Pickins blog had a great tutorial on how to age new wood.
There are many tutorials out there on this technique so I can't credit the originator.
I found this blog through Pinterest.
I use vinegar to clean all the time in my house so I'm used to the smell. The oxidation of the steel wool might bother some, so do this step outside.

Here is what I made
with new wood
and plumbers pipe.
Here it is in it's new home where the buffet used to be.
It has wheels, which is good because it's really heavy.
If I get tired of it in this spot it will make a fabulous potting bench outside.
I shopped the house and the garage for some accessories.
My garage had a special on wall sconces, dust off one and get two more free.
I used my Grandmother's watercolors on the left side of the mirror.
I like the mix of the more ornate gold mirror with the rustic shelves.
I picked up the 3 rusty baskets at Homegoods.
I bought the little hanging industrial light on clearance at Anthropologie for $49.
I probably could make one, but for that price why?
I've had the antique pully forever.
The light bulb is from Home Depot.
It's half as expensive as what Anthro. wanted for their antique looking bulb.
I hung them with old drapery rod brackets.
Being a hoarder has it's advantages.
I'm happy with the new look...for now.
The great thing is I can change up the display for every season and I can wheel the shelves outside for parties to set up a portable buffet or bar.

Are you liking the industrial trend that's made it's way into
home decor?
Thanks for checking it out.
Wowie wow! That' pretty fantastic looking. As my teenage son's into steampunk, we're definitely going to incorporate lots of industrial touches for his room remodel this spring. Maybe we'll even try a shelving unit like yours!
ReplyDeleteHi Tracey, thanks so much for becoming a follower and for leaving such a sweet comment about my shelves. Steam punk is so perfect for a boys room. I would love to see what you come up with. Have a great weekend!

ReplyDeleteUuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmaaaazzzinnnngggg!!!!!! I lovelovelove what you built!!!! I'm a huge fan of industrial pieces in decorating and always have been. ReplyDeleteI love you you did this. It looks amazing! I have tons of vinegar in the house because I use it for multiple purposes. Now I have another use for it! I would like an industrial piece some place. Anthropologie lights are great, too. I also like that you have your grandmother's artwork on display.
ReplyDeleteYou did a terrific job on your shelving. And I love the way you styled it.
ReplyDeleteI L-O-V-E love this!
ReplyDeleteNot only is it fab, but the styling is top notch.
I love it! I quite like the industrial trend, and have a few pieces that lean that way in my home. May I ask...approximately how much did materials cost you for you very cool shelf?
ReplyDeleteLove the shelves you made. Great styling too and really love the mirror above it. Popped in from Pamela's. I am a changeaholic, too.
ReplyDeleteLOOOOOOVE your industrial shelving! I'm mixing industrial and elegant in my future living room, so I might have to do this. I'm a new follower. :)

ReplyDeleteOMGoodness! My eyes couldn't stop looking! I missed that hanging light at Anthro, darn it.
ReplyDeleteYou inspired me today, thank you!
The shelving is awesome! The staging is just perfect! And YES it does pay to be a hoarder sometimes :). Wish my hubby understood...
ReplyDeleteI too have been looking everywhere for an easy weathered bookcase look and had just about driven myself crazy looking for something do-able that didn't cost an arm and a leg. This is it! I'm printing a picture to take with me to gather my supplies. Plus, that vinegar trick...priceless. I buy gallons of it every year, it's one of my favorite cleaning supplies. Had totally forgotten about that vinegar steel wool thing that I'd read about years ago.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Just WOW! And who knew the barrew hoops would look so great on the wall? I guess you did lol! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I was looking for for our shop, but I'd love one in our home too! I'm a new "follower" - love your blog and hey...I was born and raised in Chula Vista..nice to see a "homegirl" in blog land! Looking forward to more of your posts.

I'm impressed! I love the industrial trend right now and this is perfect for it. It looks great in your space and with all of your accessories. I have a thing for wire baskets too. Still working out a way to use one to make a light fixture. I'm a new follower...I like your style :)
ReplyDeleteDrool, covet, drool, WOW!!!!! I cannot believe my eyes. You are a girl after my own heart. I have a lovely buffet that we are selling because I really wanted something like what you just made! I have been collecting pictures as well, esp. love the ones I see in Wisteria, not so much the price. I am so putting this to the top of my project list. This looks amazing! I am signing up to get your blog by email, you need Linky Tools Connect! Google friends is going away soon and people won't be able to find you on their dashboard.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing: I would LOVE it if you stopped by my link party that is open and runs through the weekend. Redoux.blogspot.com (Moving soon to redouxinteriors.com). Thanks!!
What a great vignette that you've created using this cool shelf unit! Luv all that you've used for this industrial/romantic look! Visiting from Pamela's party. Sue
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Word. I have a giant crush on this! Amazing. I am a happy new follower!
ReplyDeleteI pinned this!! Question - how did you attach the boards to one another and what did you use underneath (any type of legs)?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Kelly
Hey :) can I shop in your garage! This is awesome, if you get tired of it, I want it!
ReplyDeleteDebbie
Shannon, that's amazing! I have been wanting to sell the desk in my living room and replace it with an industrial shelf, but they are too expensive. You did a great job! Did it cost a lot to make?
ReplyDeleteAlso, thanks for the comment on my blog about unfinished projects. Knowing that you operate the same way I do makes me feel a whole lot better about myself. :-)
~Heather
Oh. My. Word. I love everything about this! Those shelves are awesome. I'm thinking of putting some in a little reading corner. I am loving the industrial mixed with farmhouse look. You absolutely rocked this look!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Easter weekend!
Deborah

ReplyDeleteWow, wow, wow! I like it a lot! I have to make one of these some day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing it :)
Love these! Thanks for sharing this great idea as well as the link for the how-to on aging new wood!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this! Did you drill holes for the piping to go all the way through? Or, did you just have the pipes fit into the round fittings screwed on to the planks?
ReplyDeleteI love your shelving and everything you put on display. Today is my first visit to you and I love your title. I am always up for just about anything!
ReplyDeleteAwesome...I pinned it...I am featuring it tomorrow...and I want to make some!
ReplyDeleteI love your style! I've been thinking of making some industrial- type shelving for our living room and love how yours turned out! I also like your wine barrel rings- I had one from an old planter and turned it into a mirror. If you have some time I'd love it if you'd stop by my blog to check out the giveaway I'm having for a Ramsign Home Sign!
ReplyDeleteWow! I LOVE your shelving..totally in love with the industrial/vintage look that is infiltrating our homes! lol...you have some beautiful things to bring the shelving to life as well..lucky you! they're gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove this project and the tip on the HD light bulb... who knew??
ReplyDeleteYou are the answer to my prayers. I have a few old narrow doors that I have been letting sit while I find the perfect inspiration for how to make them into shelves for my young son's room. Now I have it! So happy I don't have to do the bunch of cutting that was my other solution. I even have a spare set of industrial style castors hanging around. Love.it.
ReplyDeleteLove! Love! Can you give more details of how you pieced it all together? Example: did you use nails, screws to section the three boards together? I would love to build something like this for my new house entry! Let us know! Great idea and beautiful style!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I can't wait to try it! Does it matter what kind of wood you get? Like, do you have to sand it just because it was new?
ReplyDeleteShannon, I found your blog today and it is beautiful. Your truly an artist. I really love industrial style table that you made. May I ask how you connected 3 pieces of wood into one panel? Is there a tool/staple gun/glue that I can use to accomplish it? I am new at this so your advice will be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI am also interested to know how the three pieces were connected. Metal strap underneath?
DeleteHello! I love it! I quite like the industrial trend..........

Love the shelving!! I had no idea you could do that with vinegar and steel wool. like you I clean with vinegar all the time : ) This is definitely a project i am going to have to try : )
ReplyDeleteReally like! Really like! Are you able to provide more information showing how a person pieced everything with each other? Instance: do you utilize fingernails, anchoring screws in order to area three panels with each other? I might like to develop this type of thing with regard to the|healthcare professional|personal|my own, personal|search terms|my own , personal|medical professional|published|health care provider|my business|all of my|of my|excellent|my own personal|keyword phrases|a|offered|economical|day-to-day|web page} brand new home access! Inform us! Good idea as well as gorgeous design!
ReplyDeleteThis industrial table is great... I would love to try and make something similar-- thanks for the inspiration! Would it be possible for you to give instructions or take a photo of the bottom of the shelves?? I am not sure how you have attached the boards. This would be awesome!!! THANKS again!!
ReplyDeleteI was imagining something just like this, on a smaller scale, as a bar cart for my living room! Thank you for sharing this project - I'm so inspired, I want to go to Lowes right now for the wood!!!
ReplyDeleteCould you email me? I am curious how the pieces of wood stay together? Are they glued, nailed?
ReplyDeleteVery pretty and I'd like to make my own :)

Very cool. I like the industrial trend, and you've done an excellent job incorporating it with the "fancier" decorations. It looks like it could be a nice store display. Also, I love how you combined the table, mirror, and decorative top piece to get the look of a sideboard without actually having one. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteUm, wow! This is truly amazing and gorgeous and all that. I'm really interested in the vinegar distressing. Although we have a barn full of barn wood so maybe I'll never need it. Still, it turned out really well and looks totally aged. How cool is that?
ReplyDeleteI love the way you used plumbing pipes. It's truly as lovely as something out of Restoration Hardware. Awesome job.
Stopping over from Random Acts of Craftiness.
Stopping over from Erin's blog and I fell in love with your project. Very, very awesome.
ReplyDeleteWow, this looks like something out of a Restoration Hardware catalog! Great job! I have been wanting to add some warehouse shelving texas to our home. This is great inspiration. Thanks!

Great post. I love diy articles like this. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI love this and want to do it but I am not seeing the instructions??
ReplyDeleteLOVE it and totally doing some taller shelves for my kitchen! Can you give me some details on how you got the three pieces of wood together on each shelf? What is underneath? thanks for your time!
ReplyDeleteWas curious how the three pieces were attached? I love this piece!! This is just what I have been looking for. I am planning on using it as a TV stand. Thanks so much and look forward to seeing many more posts.
ReplyDeleteIf you look closely at on of the pictures you can see there are metal straps attached to the bottom of the shelves. These straps can be purchased at your local hardware store.
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! We just rearranged our living room and are in need of some new shelving for behind the couch. Everything I like is out of our budget, but this is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI am in love! You make me gasp out loud! I love how one can customize this and make it fit into any room! Just lovely!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely LOVE! Everything works so well together. I've been searching for a buffet similar to put at the end of our kitchen counters. I'll have to make this. Another weekend project for me! :D
ReplyDeleteCame across this on pinterest....must say this is quite GENIUS!!!! I am going to have to build some shelves now! I've done the wood distressing and can vouch for the steel wool smell...pee-yew!!! Wonderful job!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFrom your photos I created my own 3 shelf unit. It's 6' long, and my shelves are 16" wide. I had to use new boards which I stained as I don't have any lying around. I love how mine turned out. So thanks for yours that sparked my interest in making this.
ReplyDeleteSteph A
I love these shelves and plan on buying the supplies this weekend to make my own. Can you tell me how long your buffet table is? I wanted to do a 6 feet long (approx 22" deep) table and was hoping I could get away with not having to do the middle section of pipe?
ReplyDeleteAnd just to clarify - you apply the vinegar with the steel wool and thats all you do?
Thanks! Great job and great blog!
I love, love this - new follower, and am so loving on the industrial trend. it's a lot romantic, with a little bit of edgy to it. I'm always on the lookout for new places to use it in my own home. Thanks for sharing! -Kim from knockitoffcrafts.blogspot.com
